BEEN DIVING LATELY?
If you have not been diving within the last six months or so, a Scuba Skills Update is recommended to renew your skills prior to your next open water dive. If it has been longer, the Refresher Course would be the best way to once again become comfortable with your equipment, or that new item you have just acquired. Sign up with Scuba Hut of Maryland for the class that is appropriate for you.
Interrested in specialty classes? We have a variety of courses that can help you become comfortable is a different type of diving under the supervision of an experienced insturctor. Check the Scuba Schools tab to see the opportunities that are available.
ANNUAL EQUIPMENT SERVICE
Manufacturers require regular maintenance of your life support equipment to ensure that it functions properly. Now is the best time to bring it in for that service. Having the work done at the beginning of the year means that it will be ready to dive when you are. A spur of the moment dive trip with your own properly maintained dive gear is better than renting equipment with which you are unfamilliar, that you do not know who has used it, where it has been or when it was last serviced. It is also cheeper than having to pay a "rush" charge for a quick turn around and hope that all replacement parts are available at that time.
Bring in your regulator, BCD and tank to be sure it is ready to go diving.
PROPERLY RINSE YOUR GEAR
Your regulator is your most important piece of equipment. As a reminder, here are some steps that you should take to protect your regulator. Cover the first stage inlet (the part that mates with the tank valve) with a dust cover or even just your thumb. Rinse the first stage thoroughly with fresh water. Once it is completely rinsed, allow it to dry. Be sure there is no water caught under the dust cover that could lead to corrosion.
Do not press the purge button while your rinse your second stage inside and out. Be sure to get the salt water, sand, debris or whatever else has gotten into your regulator rinsed out before you allow it to dry. Your octopus is rarely used, but it still gathers sand, salt and debris. Be especially vigilant in rinsing your octopus as it is used in emergencies and needs to be ready for immediate use.
If you notice the chrome turning green, it is time to bring your regulator in to be cleaned, even if it has recently been serviced.
